Setting up VPN in Linux (Ubuntu)

To configure the VPN service on macOS, follow the procedure below:

Step 1: Install the OpenVPN Terminal Client

1. Open the Terminal.
2. Type in the following command to install the OpenVPN client:

sudo apt-get install openvpn -y

3. Type in your password as necessary to install the client.


Step 2: Download OpenVPN Config File

To download the configuration file please right-click on configuration file link miti.ovpn (see attachments section below) and choose "Save As" / "Save Link As ...", or equivalent, to download the file to your computer. Additionally you can download it from the Attachment section bellow.


Step 3: Connect to the VPN

1. Open the Terminal.
2. Type in the following command:

sudo openvpn --config

3. Now drag and drop your OpenVPN config file into the terminal window.

4. The command should complete itself with the location of the .ovpn file. Now press enter.

sudo openvpn --config '/home/username/Downloads/miti.ovpn'

5. Enter your M-ITI LDAP username and password when prompted.

  • "Username" insert user.name, where user.name corresponds to user.name@m-iti.org
  • "Password" corresponds to the m-iti account.

Now you are connected to M-ITI's VPN service!
